Three out of four

Betws 5 Llandeilo 9

A match report on the website two weeks running? We must be winning.

This was a tough, dour encounter but in many ways was as pleasing as the running rugby the boys played the previous week.

It was nice to note fewer changes to the 20 than usual but there were still a couple. Kyran and Ryan returned, the versatile James went out to the wing and Owain came back at 10. Among the replacements, Dylan returned on permit and it was a pleasure to welcome back Nick and Luke after long absences.

A sterile first half was punctuated by heavy showers, bright sunshine and lots of penalties. The rain and sun came and went regularly throughout the game but the penalties kept on coming all afternoon and indiscipline was a big factor in the result.

There were few scoring opportunities up to half-time – in fact, I don’t think Betws came into our 22 at all and they certainly didn’t have a kick at goal. But we didn’t have many more chances and only two of our many penalties were within kicking range. Steff nailed them both though for a 0-6 interval lead.

After the break, though, it came to life a bit and both sides tried to open the game up. In their sole attack, Betws crossed for the game’s only try from close range early on which led to a fairly tense half hour.

It’s fair to say we came closer to scoring – Ben probably had the best chance - but the match was decided on a few moments of indiscipline.

Betws had the chance to take a late lead but the long but kickable penalty they had been awarded was reversed for some dangerous play. Then, after Dylan went over near the end only to be called back for a double movement, we were given another penalty in midfield. With Bowlhead already pointing at the posts, Betws complained and were promptly marched back ten metres. On current form, Steff had every chance of nailing the original kick but there was no doubt from the shorter distance and the ref blew up immediately.

Not a pretty game, quite the opposite - in the modern world, I understand it’s called “winning ugly”. But we’ll take the points.
