Not the start we wanted!

Llandybie 7 Llandeilo 3

This won’t be a long report (it never is when we lose!) but the truth is that the game scored much higher on tension and endeavour than it did on quality and was a bit of a disappointment for us after the entertaining, promising pre-season programme.

Although we were strong on numbers, the back line was – with the greatest respect – makeshift, with Dan and Matthew playing out of position, Josh starting for the first time for a few years and Bailey struggling with an injury.

But up front we were okay. Just as well, because for the most part, this was an arm-wrestle and, though we lost Dan Roberts early after a blow to the head, things were fairly even and chances were few and far between, with Llandybie having perhaps the best opportunity of the first half when Dan successfully defended a three on one foot race. The only score before the break was the second of Osian’s penalty attempts to give us a 3-0 interval lead.

It was more of the same in the second half and the game was destined to be a one score affair. After we had created, but failed to take, a couple of chances, our hosts made the decisive break in the last quarter, Merlyn McLelland crossing for Fonzie to convert.

We might have conceded a second try in the dying stages but Llandybie were called back for a knock-on. From the scrum five we worked our way up field with our best period of play of the entire afternoon. For a minute or two it looked as if we might just pinch it but we faltered in the home 22 and it was all over.

So just a losing bonus point from our first tussle with our closest rivals for many years but plenty to be positive about. A few home games in quick succession and boys returning from injury over the next couple of weeks…disappointing yesterday but not the end of the world. Ymlaen Llandeilo.

And finally, it might not have been the greatest game, but it was a proper old-school local derby. Lots of familiar faces in the healthy crowd, plenty of banter and a couple of pints afterwards. Just how grass roots rugby should be.
