First double of the season

Penybanc 8 Llandeilo 12

None of us wanted to be in Three West B but one of the best things about it is the number of great local derbies it keeps throwing up. Saturday’s clash at Penybanc was no exception – another one score game, the result in doubt all the way through and huge commitment from both teams.

It’s fair to say that both we and Penybanc were fairly high on confidence following significant victories the previous week; Banc posted a thumping win against Bangor in the SWALEC Bowl and, of course, we regained Towy Valley bragging rights over Llangadog in the league.

Banc were more prominent in the early stages and opened the scoring with a penalty but we struck back beautifully midway through the half. Steff put Brad into space and he cut through the defence with a lovely break. He almost got there himself but managed to pop the ball up to his quietly efficient centre partner Chris to finish off.

Owain wasn’t able to convert but, just when it looked like we might go into the break with the lead, Banc’s forwards rolled over in the corner for a half time lead of 8-5.

As has happened so often in a very competitive division this season, it seemed likely that one score would separate the teams and, although Penybanc’s strong running backs caused our defence no end of problems and came close to crossing more than once, we managed to create the only score of the second half. Steffan found himself in acres of space out on the right and went over comfortably for Owain to convert.

The four point gap meant that Banc needed a try to win and they threw everything into attack in the closing stages (for which I think a fair adjective would be “feisty”) but the boys defenced well once again and held firm to claim our first double of the season.

Another successful and, eventually, enjoyable away trip then and another great advert for grass roots rugby. A warm welcome from our hosts on and off the pitch and handshakes and a beer or two together afterwards.

Finally, a special mention and congratulations to young Ceri Davies, son of former club captain Huw Post, who came on late in the game for his first team debut.
